Half of HK adults obese and sick with high cholesterol, diabetes

Half of Hong Kong people aged between 15 to 84 years are overweight or obese, a health survey revealed today.

This group of people also has high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, the Department of Health reported today in its Population Health Survey .

The study shows that about 86.3 percent of the population do not meet the World Health Organization recommendation for dietary salt intake, with their salt consumption exceeding the limit of 5 grams per day.

The prevalence of high cholesterol in the age group between 15 and 84 years is 49.5 per cent, while the rate for prevalence of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol is 59.2 percent, the survey found.

The survey was done December 2014 and August 2016. It was the second large-scale Hong Kong-wide survey of its type, health officials said.
