Minor gains in May for HK retirement funds

Each investor of The Mandatory Provident Fund earned about HK$2,800 on average last month, data from Lipper under Refinitiv showed.

The calculation was based on 2.847 million MPF scheme members with a total net asset value of HK$969.5 billion as of December 31.

In May, funds under the MPF scheme grew by 0.82 percent on average, with all equities funds, excluding mainland and Hong Kong stocks, reporting losses.

Mainland stocks fell by 1.87 percent. Hong Kong stocks fell by 4.03 percent, being the worst performer.

The best performer, Japanese equities gained by  6.64 percent. American and European stocks were up by 4.8 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively.

Among 38 Hong Kong stocks funds under the MPF scheme, only Haitong edged up by 0.11 percent.
