Hang Seng ticks up at close, Asia shares climb

Stocks in Hong Kong closed sharply higher today.  The benchmark Hang Seng Index ticked up by 371.89 points, or 1.53 percent at 24,602.06.

At one point, the index shot up by 523.80 points, or 2.16 percent at 24,753.97. The HSI rallied by 0.99 percent at the open. 

In mainland China, the  benchmark Shanghai Stock Composite Index was flat at 2,894.80, while the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index eased by 0.23 percent at 1,804.74.

In Asia, Tokyo stocks closed higher. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index advanced 1.05 percent, or 211.57 points, to close at 20,390.66, while the broader Topix index added 1.53 percent, or 22.34 points, to 1,480.62.

The Australia benchmark, the S&P/ASX 200 closed sharply higher, up by 1.3 percent to 5,461 points. Also, the Australian dolalr firmed by 0.2 percent to 65.4 US cents.
