Marginal gains for Hang Seng

Hong Kong blue chip eked out marginal gains at the close today. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 194.27 points, or 0.84 percent at 23,280.06.

Shares in HSBC (0005) fell by 2.63 percent at HK$ 38.90.

In mainland China, the benchmark Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index closed higher, up by 1.69 percent, or 46.12 points at 2,780.64, while the  Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index added 2.26 percent, or 37.48 points at 1,697.56.

In Tokyo,  stocks fell for a fourth consecutive session. The benchmark Nikkei 225 average shed1.37 percent, or 246.69 points, to
close at 17,818.72 while the broader Topix index was down 1.57 percent, or 21.21 points, at 1,329.87.

In Australia, stocks fell at the close, led by the major banks, after the International Monetary Fund told governments to enact wartime measures to fight the coronavirus pandemic. The S&P/ASX 200 lost 2 percent and the All Ordinaries index fell by 1.9 per cent.
