Father-son drama tops China box office

"Looking Up," a new Chinese family drama, continued to top the Chinese mainland box office yesterday, the China Movie Data Information Network said.

Full of joy, tears, warmth, and wonder, "Looking Up" explores China’s exam-oriented education system, in which students are spoon-fed learning material by teachers to achieve high scores - these are considered the only ticket to top universities, a good career and comfortable life, CGTN reports.

Tthe drama follows the ups and downs of a talented bridge designer, Ma Haowen, who is also a single father of Ma Fei. 

The film raked in 100.48 million yuan, accounting for more than 39 percent of the daily total, Xinhua reports.

It was followed by "The Lion King," Disney's live-action remake of its classic, which grossed 55.35 million yuan on its tenth day of screening.

"The White Storm 2: Drug Lords," the sequel to the 2013 crime action film "The White Storm," took third place with a daily box office revenue of 34.75 million yuan. Its total box office has reached close to 1.19 billion yuan.
