Millennials and student groups in Hong Kong prefer to use debit cards instead of credit cards, Maaike Steinbach, the general manager of Hong Kong and Macau at Visa said.

Also,  she found that the city overall credit card usage was much higher.

The Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes Study conducted by Visa found that half of those surveyed plan to go cashless. Non-cash payment methods are preferred by 71 percent compared with 59 percent in Taiwan and 26 percent in Macau.

Security is the main concern, with only 3 percent of interviewees not worried.

The study tracks consumer perceptions and attitudes in payments and financial services in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as eight other Southeast Asian markets.
