The Hong Kong society demands to let Hongkongers living in the mainland to vote, especially after experiencing the current pandemic, where people could not commute freely, says Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

Carrie Lam told a television interview that the government had policies encouraging Hongkongers to study or work in the mainland over the years.

She claimed that authorities must explore a solution of allowing people who could not return to the city to vote, saying Hongkongers living in the mainland are being “so near and yet so far”.

Sources say the Hong Kong government is now looking for a way to allow Hongkongers living in the greater bay area to vote, and will publish the details in this year’s policy address.
