Gabriel Leung estimates virus death rate at 1.4pc

University of Hong Kong faculty of medicine dean, Gabriel Leung Cheuk-wai, said today the estimated mortality rate of the new coronavirus from his team's mathematical model is about 1.4 percent.

In a press briefing today, Leung said although 1.4 percent appears to be low, if hundreds of thousands are infected globally, there will be many deaths.

He said the mortality rate in elderly people is relatively higher, and the chance of dying from the virus for patients above the age of 70 is three times higher than for the rest.

Leung stressed that before a reliable vaccine is widely available, every one has a chance of being infected.
