HSBC (0005) has appointed Zurich-based headhunter Egon Zehnder to select potential candidates for a new chief executive after the ousting of John Flint, The Sunday Times reported.
The short list of external candidates includes Stephen Bird, chief executive of Global Consumer Banking at Citigroup, and RSA Insurance chief Stephen Hester, who previously led the Royal Bank of Scotland. Noel Quinn, interim chief executive of HSBC, is also a hopeful candidate.
The report said experience in Asia is crucial for the bank as a majority of profit is from the region.
Meanwhile, Li Yue, 60, has announced he will be stepping down as chief executive of China Mobile (0941), after nine years.
And in other news, Alibaba executive chairman and chief executive Daniel Zhang Yong, executive vice-chairman Joseph Tsai, and president of Ant Financial Hu Xiaoming, have become directors of Ant Financial after Alibaba Group bought a third of its stakes.
