China's top paid movie star Fan Bingbing - not seen in public since July - came last in a report ranking A-list celebrities on social responsibility.

The 36-year-old has been a big name in China for years and tasted Hollywood success in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Last year she topped Forbes magazine's list of top-earning Chinese celebrities with income of 300 million yuan (HK$343 million).

But she has been out of sight in recent months following allegations of tax evasion.

Now, Beijing Normal University has ranked 100 Chinese stars according to professional work, charitable efforts and personal integrity.

But with a pass required a score of more than 60 percent and only nine celebrities made the cut, with actor Xu Zheng top on 78 percent.

As for Fan, she scored zero. The compilers say only that findings are based on "research and web-scraping."

Fans are jumping to her defense. One wrote on Weibo: "What kind of a report is this? Fan has done so much good work!"

Fan's troubles began in May when an ex-presenter for CCTV posted purported contracts online to suggest she received under-the-table payments. That was followed by tax authorities investigating.

But Fan will soon be seen in Hollywood spy thriller 355 alongside Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz.
