The new Chinese University of Hong Kong headmaster vowed to serve the institution and respect students' rights on his first day of office yesterday.

Rocky Tuan Sungchi took over from Joseph Sung Jao-yiu as CUHK vice-chancellor and president.

He expressed three wishes in an open letter to all students, staff and alumni.

"I wish I will soon have the pleasure to meet and know you, individually or collectively," he said.

Tuan also wished students and faculty staff success, and spoke of engaging more alumni.

"CUHK has a distinguished alumni body and I believe their engagement will be a powerful force to enhance the global stature and impact of the university."

Tuan added he would keep an open mind and respect students' rights to agree and disagree.

Tuan served as a visiting professor and director at CUHK's Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. He also served as a researcher in three American institutions.
