Worst Yangtze River drought in 40 years

World | REUTERS 8 Nov 2019

Middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are suffering from the worst drought in 40 years, the People's Daily said.

Citing the relevant ministry, the newspaper said the drought was affecting local grain production in the region.

The total arable land affected by drought was 154 percent higher than last year, the ministry said.

The Ministry of Emergency Management said temperatures were 1-3 degrees Celsius higher than usual in the provinces of Hubei, Jiangxi, and Anhui and Fujian's southeastern coast.

China has suffered several bouts of extreme weather this year. Government forecasters have attributed record-high summer temperatures and rainfall across China to global warming.
