Jazz adds swing to Art Park

Local | 6 Nov 2019

Following the opening of the Xiqu Chinese Opera Center at the end of last year, Freespace became the West Kowloon Cultural District's second performance venue when it started operations in June.

It has a large "black box" theater and two smaller spaces. The building is next to the lawn area of the Art Park, so events can also be held outdoors.

The facility is designed to host contemporary performances, with a view to particularly attracting younger audiences.

It has already begun partnering with the Edward Lam Dance Theatre, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and others. There is also a bar-cafe that hosts live music.

It is now launching Freespace Jazz Fest, which takes place this weekend (November 9-10). It promises to be a very interesting annual event.

Among featured overseas acts are the Robert Glasper Trio, GoGo Penguin, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Noa Drezner Flamenco Quartet and House of Waters. Among others, local musicians include Eugene Pao, Ted Lo, Patrick Lui and Elisa Chan.

There are also events on such themes as Women in Jazz and Jazz for Kids plus jam sessions and an outdoor performance by the Hong Kong Ballet, including The Great Gatsby.

There's lots more and it's all free, but you need to book tickets. See www.westkowloon.hk for details.

This whole part of the West Kowloon project is nearing completion. The last phase of the Art Park and the two-kilometer harborside promenade should be completed by the end of this year.
