Suicidal mother saved after daughter dies

A 51-year-old woman, who was prevented from jumping from her 34-story flat, was arrested for the murder of her 16-year-old daughter in Tin Shui Wan.

The body of the secondary four teenager was found on the floor of her bedroom after police and firemen dragged her mother back to the flat from the window ledge of their Heng Kin House in Tin Heng public housing estate.

The two were heard quarreling after the daughter returned home on Wednesday night, according to reports at the scene.

The girl had earlier run away from home when her mother tried to prevent her from seeing her boyfriend.

Police suspect the woman scolded her daughter when she returned home and the girl was stabbed during an argument, suffering several knife wounds.

It is understood the mother, Kwok, lived with her daughter in the flat since a divorce that saw her husband and son move out.

Following the quarrel, Kwok climbed out of her 34th-floor flat at about 6.35 am and sat on a ledge.

Police and firemen arrived soon after. Firefighters prepared a rescue cushion on the street, while two other firefighters climbed an external wall to reach the window ledge in a bid to persuade Kwok to return to her flat.

At 8.30 am, a police negotiator arrived and persuaded Kwok to cooperate. She was then rescued by firefighters and taken to Tin Shui Wai Hospital for a check-up.

Kwok was subsequently transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital.

Police entering her flat to investigate discovered the daughter lying unconscious on her bedroom floor and a suicide note from Kwok. The daughter was declared dead at the scene.

The case is being handled by detectives from the Yuen Long district crime squad, with police classifying the case as a murder and attempted suicide.

Sources said Kwok and her daughter's relationship had become strained following the divorce.
