33rd Macao International Music Festival

This October, music is in the air as the 33rd Macao International Music Festival gathers top performers around the world at Macao. This year, the annual festival is themed ‘The Instrumentalist’, and will offer 17 programs and a total of 22 riveting performances, celebrating a true musical feast.

Kicking off the festival is a grand opera- The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This critically acclaimed production by Komische Oper Berlin and the British theatre group ‘1927’ is a blend of film animation and live singing, and has been rapturously received by over 500,000 audience and critics around the globe.

Audience of all ages will marvel upon Tamino flying on the elephant’s back, the Queen of the Night as a giant spider, dancing constellations, as well as butterflies and mechanical monkeys, allowing their imaginations to run wild.

Next, audiences can immerse themselves in Trio Mediaeval’s beautifully tuned voices. The three brilliant singers from Norway will perform a selection of Norwegian and Swedish love songs, wedding tunes, lullabies, sun-prayers, ballads, religious hymns and instrumental tunes, taking audiences on a musical journey through time.

Other highlights include Dorian Wind Quintet’s joint performance with leading American composer Billy Childs to present the world premiere of Ecosystems and the return of A Day in the Forest of Dreams premiered in 1997; Manding Griot by Sona Jobarteh, the first female kora virtuoso to come from a West African griot family reputed for her skill as an instrumentalist, distinctive voice, infectious melodies and grace onstage; and The Vienna Philharmonic which will perform Dvorák’s ‘New World’ Symphony and the most virtuosic Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with megastar pianist Yuja Wang known for her technical prowess, keen musical insight and emotional depth which have firmly established her place among the world’s leading artists.

The closing concert will feature The Yellow River Cantata by Macao Orchestra and China NCPA Orchestra and Chorus, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. There will also be a variety of enthralling outreach programs where masterclasses, workshops as well as community activities will be available!

Tak Chun Art Garden Exhibition

Renowned artist Cai Guojie’s solo exhibition ‘Tak Chun Art Garden’ is currently being held at AFA Macau’s 1st floor, and will last until October 25! Cai believes that art is to create a description of differences, and artists cannot give up the power of art in the name of art.

The Tak Chun Art Garden Exhibition is a brand new attempt stemming from his previous ‘Half-Field Project’. Cai gives up the production control of the work and makes the work flow and spread in nature. The concept is that as long as humans recognize the exchange of such forms, this project will continue to circulate over time, self-generating, never ending, and is ‘nomadic’ in its nature. Through the exhibition, the audience can see through the artist’s eyes and understand his determination to resist the structure of the old rule of space- ‘Deterritorialising’ in nomadism, embracing a new and profound aesthetic attempt.

Date & Time: Now – October 25, Monday to Saturday,  11:00am – 7:00pm

Venue: 1st Floor, AFA Macau, Tak Chun Macau Art Garden, Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues N. 265, Macau.
