There's no stopping New World Development's executive vice-chairman Adrian Cheng Chi-kong. Following the launch of Rosewood Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui's Victoria Dockside, Cheng has unveiled another project in the art-and-design district: K11 Artus, the group's first ultra-luxury home development.
The portmanteau name combines the word "art" and the Latin term "domus," meaning "home." The 287-residence development boasts Asia's first hybrid artisanal home with comprehensive hotel services and an inspiring environment for culture vultures.
Designers from around the world were brought in to do up the three penthouses: local Joyce Wang, the British Fiona Barratt and New York-based nemaworkshop.
Barratt shared some of her thoughts behind her design.
What were your inspirations?
The artisanal movement is one of expanding one's imagination - not just in design and aesthetics but also modern living culture in bespoke craftsmanship.
The penthouse features pieces inspired by nature.
By transforming raw materials into beautiful pieces, the penthouse celebrates craftsmanship and skills.
My design is a visual play on heritage to create aspirational living. From my upbringing in the wilds of Northumberland to the history of the Roman dynasty and its art and architecture, the inspirations drove each and every design feature in the apartment.
What color palette did you choose?
In keeping with the emblematic use of color, I stuck to calming shades throughout, using accessories and artwork to add accents of brighter tones.
Natural materials and layering of textures, delicately accented with pops of color are applied on the penthouse design.
The main colors in living and dining rooms as well as master bathroom are neutrals and blues to complement the harbor hues. While the entertainment areas feature colors that embody boldness, excitement and flexibility, the bedrooms are calm and sophisticated.
What is the theme?
Riding on the philosophy of K11's Artisanal Movement, the design aims to give the feel of a luxury residence. Almost every piece of furniture and lighting is made bespoke by FBC London.
Although this is a commercial project, I felt it was imperative to inject a homely feel - of short-term accommodation with the benefits of long-term luxury.
The light-filled rooms have contemporary interior designs with a wow factor. The zoning takes full advantage of extraordinary harbor views.
What are some key pieces?
I chose furniture that tells a story and defines the scheme they're set in: a FBC Aurora Table in the living room, a stunning double-side fireplace in the living room, a bespoke dining table and lighting in the dining room, a FBC Prive Valet and bespoke leather engraved panelling in the master bedroom, a reclaimed resin-dipped silver-coated barn planks in the master bathroom steam room, a FBC Armour Chair in the second bedroom, and a FBC City Finish in the third.
We worked with globally-recognized masters of lighting: Christopher Boots in the dining room, Gabriel Scott in the living room, Apparatus in the master bedroom, and Lindsey Adelman in the second bedroom. The floors are covered with bespoke knotted rugs by Tai Ping.
How long did everything take?
The designs were created nearly four years ago but installed recently, a testament their timelessness.
Which parts are you most proud of?
The entire penthouse; it has real design integrity. Careful space planning provides views from almost every room, the flow is open and easy to navigate.
Well-thought-out finishes all provide textural interest throughout.
