The 30th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest is back to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Macao SAR in spectacular fashion

The 30th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region, and there is no better way to celebrate the auspicious occasion than with a starburst of magnificent fireworks lighting up the night sky of Macao.

Throughout September and at the beginning of October, teams from around the world will converge at Macao to deliver a magnificent display of fireworks, demonstrating their expertise and unique style. Over the years, over 100 teams have attended the contest, and with this year being its 30th anniversary, the roster is even merrier.

The firework displays will be held on September 7, 13, 21, 28, and October 1 and 5, featuring teams in the order of Malaysia, Philippines, Portugal, Korea, United Kingdom, Romania, South Africa, Canada, France, China, Japan, and Australia. The performances will be held at 9 pm and 9:40 pm on these dates at the sea area in front of the Macau Tower.

The twelve pyrotechnic teams will choreograph their 18-minute fireworks shows to the top-prize-winning song ‘Light your fire’ as one of their background music scores, while the top entry of the last Trophy Design Contest is chosen as the design of the real trophies awarded to the winners of the 30th fireworks display contest, fostering greater cultural diversity and creativity.

This year, audiences also have the option to elevate their firework experience to a whole new level with Macau Cruise’s all-new firework watching experience! They can avoid the crowd and enjoy the stunning fireworks and Macau skyline from the sea. The cruises will depart on the firework performance dates at 8pm at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, and includes light refreshments of food and beverages.

Aside from the firework displays, there will also be a rage of captivating outreach programs and contests held to celebrate the occasion. There will be a seminar about fireworks at Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.2, enriching the public with information on the process of fireworks production, on-site installations among other specialty information so residents can gain a deeper understanding of fireworks and the contest.

For contests, there will be the popular Photo Contest and Student Drawing Contest as usual where residents can try to capture the beauty of the fireworks displays with their cameras, while artistic and young students are invited to join the drawing contest and showcase their creative talents. There will also be two new contests of video production and poster design launching this year.

For those who wish to enjoy the event at the comfort of their own home, they can still vote for their favorite fireworks teams online and enter a lucky draw for a chance to win attractive prizes. The fireworks displays will also be live broadcasted on TDM – HD TV Channel with the synchronized music streaming from TDM - Radio Macao’s Chinese Channel (FM100.7) at the scheduled firework times, allowing everyone to enjoy the beauty of the fireworks and celebrate the occasion together.

Last but not least, there will be a Fireworks Carnival next to the Macau Tower from 5 pm to 11 pm on the six fireworks evenings. The Carnival will be a confluence of culinary delights, performances, parent-and-kid workshops and games, offering a palette of fantastic experiences.

Alban Gerhardt and Macao Orchestra

Macao Orchestra 2019-2020 Season Opening Concert

Illustrating all kinds of worldly phenomena and reflecting the composers’ life experiences, music contemplates society and inspires people in a unique, abstract language with strong emotional impact. In this 2019-2020 season opening concert, the Macao Orchestra presents, in cooperation with internationally acclaimed cellist Alban Gerhardt, Dmitry Shostakovich’s “Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 107”- a work that uses the clash between cello and ensemble as a metaphor for the struggle of individual versus society. The program also features Antonin Dvorak’s fiery and enthusiastic ‘Carnival Overture’, which celebrates the eternal flame of life, and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Symphony No. 5’, demonstrating the composer’s complete confrontation with fate. Absolute masterpieces!
