An assistant of popular Canto-pop composer Mark Lui Chung-tak appeared in Kowloon City Magistrates' Court yesterday for allegedly stealing about HK$2.5 million from him and his company.

Dominy Cheng Kar-yan, 36, was charged with one count of using a false document and six counts of theft. No plea was taken from her.

The court heard that between January 2012 and August 2013, Cheng on six occasions stole cash and property worth HK$2.48 million from Lui and his company - two from Lui's personal account, two from Mark Lui and His Music Production Ltd, one from Power Music Ltd and one from another Lui subsidiary company.

She allegedly stole HK$689,000, HK$1.17 million, HK$160,000, HK$301,082, HK$115,923 and HK$50,000 over 20 months.

Cheng was also charged with using a false document by uttering a fake copy of a credit card bill in an attempt to make Lui believe it was an authentic document.

The case came to light after Lui found abnormalities in his bank accounts and reported to police.

Magistrate Raymond Wong Kwok-fai adjourned the hearing to September 3 for transfer to the District Court in Wan Chai.

Cheng was released on bail but she is not allowed to leave Hong Kong. She was also banned from contact with witnesses.

Lui, 50, is a famous songwriter and music producer in Hong Kong.

After he graduated with a bachelor degree of civil engineering from Imperial College London, Lui returned to the SAR and joined the music industry by becoming a member of late composer James Wong Jum-sum's team.

Lui became famous after he produced music for movies The Lovers and Green Snake in the early 1990s. He and members of Wong's team won the best original film song at the Hong Kong Film Awards for their music in The Lovers.

He subsequently became the producer for Canto-pop singer Aaron Kwok Fu-shing and Leon Lai Ming.

Lui has also established his own businesses in fashion and interior design.
