Boxer era-style attack on 'Lennon Wall'

Central Station | 17 Jul 2019

Posters touting the "Eight-Nation Alliance" and flags of foreign countries were plastered on Tai Po's Lennon Tunnel yesterday.

At around 2am, about 50 masked people glued the posters onto the walls in the tunnel and covered the "Lennon Wall," which in Hong Kong comprises post-it notes penned by people against the fugitive bill.

The masked men stopped onlookers from filming them, and left 20 buckets of glue at the scene.

The alliance was a military coalition set up following the Boxer Rebellion in China during the Qing dynasty. It consisted of Japan, Russia, Britain, France, the United States, Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary.

The term is widely used by pro-Beijing lawmakers and activists to accuse foreign countries of intervening in Hong Kong issues.
