Major advance in cancer fight as clinic opens

The SAR's first facility for cancer treatment outside a hospital has been opened in Shau Ke Wan and includes technology that can increase the effectiveness of radiotherapy.

Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital is behind the Eastern Medical Centre, which spans over 20,000 square meters.

Besides a cancer center there is a family medicine outpatient clinic and health assessment unit.

The cancer center boasts Asia's first magnetic resonance linac and two magnetic resonance simulators.

"This is extremely advanced medical technology," said Wyman Li, chief operating officer of HKSH Medical Group and manager of Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.

"A tumor - its position, shape and the organ at risk - can be checked on a daily basis before and during radiotherapy."

The precision in tracking tumors and performing radiotherapy also reduces the side effects patients suffer, he added.

The cancer center offers all major cancer treatment modalities, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. But surgeries will not be performed there.

Walton Li Wai-tat, chief executive of HKSH Medical Group, said: "Cancer patients and their families often think cancer diagnosis is a death sentence. We know the depression, denial and fear that this sickness brings will affect the quality of life of these people.

"Cancer is curable. We want our comprehensive facilities and patient oriented services to give them the hope they need. We will fight this war together."
