Apple Daily apologizes to Ma, LuiLocal | Staff Reporter 12 Jul 2019
Apple Daily yesterday apologized to former MTR Corp Ltd chairman Frederick Ma Si-hang and tycoon Lui Che-woo after the paper last month wrongly accused Ma of taking trips on Lui's private jet last year.
"The June 30 report mentioned that MTR Corp chairman Frederick Ma Si-hang took a private jet of K Wah International Holdings chairman Lui Che-woo last year. After verification, the correct time should be in September 2014, and the private jet does not belong to Lui," the newspaper wrote in an online statement.
"Apple Daily apologizes to Ma and Lui for the misunderstandings or other unfounded rumors induced by the report."
The June 30 report included photos of them together on the jet, saying they went on overseas trips last year while Ma was chairman of the rail operator. It also reported how K Wah International Holdings, of which Lui is chairman, was in a consortium that beat 10 rival bids to win the latest phase of the Lohas Park development.
Earlier this month, Ma said he would reserve the right to take legal action against Apple Daily after the newspaper accused him of misconduct over his ties with Lui.
Ma expressed "serious concerns" about the news report on his relationship with Lui, saying it was "extremely misleading."
"Since I took up the chairmanship of MTR Corporation in 2016, I have not been on Mr Lui Che-woo's private jet," he said.
Having been in public service and served in government positions for many years, Ma said he was keenly aware of the importance of avoiding conflicts of interest.
