Stepping back in time

Since the 1970s, Parmigiani Fleurier's founder Michel Parmigiani has been setting up his own workshop for restoring precious collections from museums and collectors, including vintage Patek Philippe and Breguet clocks and watches.

The Swiss has been placing the secret mechanisms he found in the collections into his own Parmigiani Fleurier watches, a unique brand that pursues modern character while preserving the classic elements.

"In 1980, after finishing restoration work for the Sandoz family's collection, the Sandoz's initialed the idea of setting up a brand for Michel Parmigiani," said Patrick Wehrli, the director of exceptional pieces and restoration of the Swiss brand.

"Until today, Parmigiani is still persisting in repairing vintage watches, and has developed a lot of tools for the work.

"At every years' SIHH watch exhibition, the brand would make a one-of-a-kind clock, tributing to all classic collections."

The luxury brand visited Hong Kong earlier this year, holding an exhibition at Prince Jewellery & Watch in Tsim Sha Tsui. Apart from showing the latest watches, the Dragon and the Pearl of Wisdom clock has attracted attention. The dragon clock uses the ancient Chinese 12 divisions to display the time. The dragon on top has a Chinese look, but not like those in a western comic. "The clock is not targeting Chinese, but showing the world about the mysterious Chinese timing," said Wehrli.
