Lai wants political bite from US

Central Station | 12 Jul 2019

Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying has been meeting numerous senior United States officials, with the latest being National Security Adviser John Bolton on Wednesday.

The media mogul was in Washington to seek support from the United States government over Hong Kong issues.

Lai told Bolton about the recent protests against the fugitive bill and requested that the American government back youngsters in the SAR.

He also urged Bolton for a show of his own personal support.

Lai has this week met with Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a few republican senators.

Bloomberg reported such arrangements are rare as Lai is a "publisher that angers Beijing," while adding that the friendly US attitude toward Lai could be seen as a sign of disrespect toward the mainland.
