American Keith Thurman is targeting the destruction of Filipino boxing great Manny Pacquiao when the two welterweights face off in Las Vegas.

Thurman, 30, puts his WBA crown on the line against the Pacquiao, 40, on July 20. And he has fanned the flames for the fight by stating he aims to send Pacquiao into retirement.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to destroy a legend and create my own legacy," he said.

"It's as if I'm fighting Sugar Ray Robinson. It's as if I'm fighting Roberto Duran."

Thurman, unbeaten in 29 fights with 22 knockouts, said Pacquiao "wants to prove his greatness. He's still reaching for greatness at age 40, and it's admirable.

"I was impressed by his performance against Adrien Broner in January. It was inspiring. After watching him I went into the streets and ran at one in the morning. Because I just watched a 40-year-old man beat a 29-year-old man.

"Manny wants to do more. I want to do more too."
