Protests leave tradeexhibitors stone cold

"If you don't think your anxiety, depression, sadness and stress impact your physical health, think again. All of these emotions trigger chemical reactions in your body, which can lead to inflammation and a weakened immune system. Learn how to cope, sweet friend. There will always be dark days."

As the downcast mood caused by the recent string of political events continues to catch on, it is high time to heed the above exhortation by New York Times best-selling author-cum-wellness activist, Kris Carr, and adopt positive steps to reverse its onslaught.

From the business perspective, among those bearing the brunt of the negative impact must be exhibitors at the two shows that were abruptly cut short on June 29 when the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre had to be closed the following day due to security concerns in Wan Chai.

Irate traders claimed that the sudden curtailment led to a loss of more than 30 percent earnings.

Likewise, anecdotal evidence at the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair held from June 20 to 23 indicated unexpectedly low levels of transactions because many buyers and collectors for obvious reasons chose to stay away from the vicinity.

If a solution to this deep-seated social rift leading to incessant street protests is not identified soon, overseas exhibitors would definitely think twice about participation in future events.

According to local traders, the only silver lining that emerged from this dense and dark cloud was the sourcing of gems, gold/silver mountings and other raw materials at an incredibly cheap price because individual practitioners from abroad were willing to slash their profit margins in view of the poor turnout of visitors.

Another distinguishing feature of this gem fair was the popularity of stones associated with positive energies or good feng shui.

Selling like proverbial hot cakes were Ammonite - a very powerful earth healing fossil with a unique spiral shape symbolizing continual change and evolution.

Often used by crystal healing experts for stimulating life force energies, chi, for those under mental or physical stress, Ammonite has for decades been deployed by feng shui masters as a magnet for prosperity, success and good health.

The opal-like gem quality variety of Ammonite is known as Ammolite.

Mined in Alberta, Canada, and Madagascar, these fossilized shells display iridescence as a result of compression and mineralization.

Apart from its spirit-lifting properties, the radiant rainbow color crystal is immensely attractive when turned into a piece of jewelry or lucky charm.
