Richard Li council ouster 'fake news'Top News | Charlotte Luo 3 Jul 2019
Shantou University says the status of Richard Li Tzar-kai remains unchanged at the institution his father Li Ka-shing co-founded nearly 40 years ago.
The elder Li has donated more than HK$10 billion to the university.
"We hereby clarify that Mr Richard Li is still a member of the Shantou University Council," it said in a letter yesterday.
It was reported on Friday that the younger Li was asked to leave the council when his father retired from his position as honorary chairman last year.
Shantou University said the report "badly misinformed the public."
Four representatives from the Li Ka Shing Foundation are on the council - Richard Li, Frieda Law, Amy Au and Katherine Lo.
Neither Li nor his son attended Shantou's graduation ceremony on Friday. It was the first time the elder Li had missed the ceremony in 18 years.
The foundation said yesterday that money is only one of the considerations when measuring support.
"We must not ignore the countless hours of strategic planning that Mr Li himself has actively participated in since the university's founding, in addition to support from his foundation staff and also pro bono consultation by professional colleagues, council members and friends of the university over the years that has brought the university to its current stage of development," the foundation said.
