Missing Hong Kong climber found deadLocal | Jane Cheung and Associated Press 21 Jun 2019
Two Hong Kong climbers who went missing while scaling a glacier in northern Pakistan last week have been found - one dead and the other rescued - by a search team.
The body of a climber from China was also found, said mountaineering officials.
The two died in harsh weather at the Liligo glacier but their bodies have not been retrieved yet.
A military helicopter rescued a third expedition member, also from Hong Kong.
The Pakistan military began the rescue on Tuesday to locate Hongkonger Ng Ka-kit and Chinese citizen Li Haoxin after a team member who remained at base camp reported that they failed to return as planned.
Karar Haideri, secretary of the Pakistan Alpine Club, said the two went missing while scaling a 6,400-meter peak.
The third member told rescue teams that he last contacted them on Friday.
At the same time, they were already on another mission to rescue a group of stranded Italian climbers after they were hit by an avalanche.
On Tuesday, an army helicopter rescued four Italian and two Pakistani climbers who were hit by an avalanche at an altitude of about 5,300 meters while descending a peak in the Ishkoman Valley in the northern district of Ghizar. The Pakistani guide died. One Italian and two female Pakistani hikers were injured.
Liligo Glacier is next to Mundu Glacier in Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan. The peak attracts hundreds of mountaineers, mostly from Europe, every summer.
In January, a Taiwanese woman, known as the "Bikini Hiker," was found frozen to death in a valley 44 hours after she sent an SOS.
Gigi Wu Jiyun, 36, went hiking alone on the Mabolasi Crossing Trail near Yushan Mountain and fell 20 meters into a valley.
She sent an SOS through a satellite telephone to her friends, who notified police but the rescue mission was halted due to bad weather.
A six-member ground search team was subsequently sent to look for Wu, but they only found her body. She appeared to have died from hypothermia as the temperature on the mountains was around two degrees Celsius and it was raining.
