Trump-Macron friendship tree dead

Central Station | 11 Jun 2019

A photograph of Donald Trump and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron planting an oak tree in the White House garden was said to symbolize the friendship shown by the two presidents.

Their relations have since frayed over issues ranging from Iran to trade, and it did not survive.

Macron offered the young oak to Trump during a state visit to Washington in 2018, and the two shoveled soil around it under the watchful eyes of their wives and cameras from around the world.

It was a symbolic gesture: the tree came from a northern French forest where 2,000 US Marines died during the World War I. But within days it had disappeared into quarantine, mandatory for any such import, but it was to be replanted. But the big intentions disappeared into a hole: the tree died in quarantine.
