Qatar is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world; it offers numerous unique sights and experiences that will sweep travellers off their feet.
Travelling to Qatar is never mundane because it has a plethora of exciting activities allowing you to fully customize your journey and experience the trip of a lifetime.
You may be surprised, but Qatar’s desert is actually among its most popular tourist attraction. For a heart-stopping ride over the rolling dunes, try a 4 x 4 off-road safari. Alternatively, go for an exciting camel ride (they are not as slow as you’d think), try sand boarding or driving a dune buggy and race through the desert sands.
While most may have camped in the wild, not many can say they have done so in a desert. You can experience camping in a traditional Bedouin-style camp at the Regency Sealine camp where daytime, evening and overnight camping trips can all be arranged. After a day of fun filled activities such as quad biking across the terrain, volleyball, and football matches, marvel at the endless ‘Inland Sea’ and the glorious desert sunsets and moonlit nights it has to offer.
Equally magnificent is Khor Al Adaid, the UNESCO recognized natural reserve. It is a rare and exquisite landscape where the sea encroaches deep into the heart of the desert.
You will also find a diverse native terrestrial flora and fauna alongside rare and endangered animal species such as dugongs and turtles that add to the spellbinding beauty of the area.
History buffs must visit the breath-taking Al Zubarah. Another UNESCO World Heritage site, this impressive archaeological site and fort on the north-west coast covers the remains of an 18th century trading and pearl diving community. A partial excavation of the site reveals the remains of palaces, houses, mosques, defensive walls, streets, a canal, and cemeteries, all just waiting to be discovered.
Afterwards, head to Katara Cultural Village - Doha’s hub for culture and entertainment, and you will find art galleries and workshops as well as theatres, performance venues, and exceptional restaurants set on a waterfront promenade inviting you to truly immerse yourself in Qatar’s culture. Its stunning architecture such as the tiled golden mosque and the central amphitheatre which soars against a backdrop of cobbled streets will take your breath away.
No trip is complete without a bit of retail therapy. Souq Waqif is Doha’s oldest market and offers visitors an authentic taste of traditional street life and culture. The design of the reconstructed century-old market pays homage to traditional Qatari construction, with mud-daubed stone walls and winding alleyways. You will find a dazzling array of Middle Eastern merchandise from dates, honey, spices and seasonal delicacies to perfumes, jewellery textiles, clothing, pets, handicrafts and souvenir bargains there. Don’t forget to visit the nearby Falcon Souq before you leave, it will give you great insight into the sport of falconry and a chance to admire these awe-inspiring birds in person!
And just in time for the holidays, the destination offers this year’s ‘Summer in Qatar’ program, running between 4 June - 16 August, with special promotions on inbound travel, hospitality, shopping, cultural and family entertainment shows and a wide range of exciting indoor and outdoor experiences. There is no time to visit this Middle Eastern gem like the present. Check Qatar off your travel bucket list now!
