Depp seeks US$50m from ex-wife

Actor Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber Heard in a US$50 million (HK$389 million) defamation lawsuit, citing an article the actress wrote for The Washington Post about domestic abuse.

The suit says that while Depp was not named it was clear Heard was talking about him. He calls her allegations of abuse "categorically and demonstrably false."

The lawsuit goes on to claim: "They were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms Heard and advance her career."

Depp, 55, claims to have suffered financial losses because of her accusations, including being dropped from his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

In her article, published in December, Heard, 32, also said she lost an acting role and contract with a fashion brand because she went public.

"I spoke up against sexual violence - and faced our culture's wrath," she wrote, and she felt she was "on trial in the court of public opinion."

A Heard lawyer said the lawsuit was "just the latest of Johnny Depp's repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard."

Heard first accused Depp of domestic violence in May 2016, a year after they married. She took a photo of herself with a bruised face to court, and a judge told Depp to stay away from her.

Their divorce was finalized in 2017.
