i-Cable Communications (1097) aims to reach more than 14 million users in the Greater Bay Area with the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with state-owned Guangdong Cable Network.
Irene Leung Shuk-yee, chief operating officer of i-Cable said yesterday the joint establishment of a smart television broadcast pilot zone will increase the reach and influence of Hong Kong programs across Guangdong, particularly in finance and entertainment programs.
The partnership will allow its audience in Hong Kong to watch the programs on its multi-media platform in addition to television, she said.
When asked about recent financial strain on i-Cable, Leung said the exclusive contract of content provider for MTR Corporation (0066) and the cooperation with China Mobile Hong Kong will bring steady income to the company.
Cable TV, the largest pay television operator in Hong Kong, serving over 2 million households, currently owns approximately 20 local channels spanning entertainment, news and sports, and more than 70 international channels.
Ye Zhi Rong, chairman of Guangdong Cable Network, said the smart infrastructure such as smart television broadcast of Guangdong cloud platform, smart media integrated network and smart home gateway, will enhance the level of technology for television. He said the two firms will collaborate in cultural and creative areas.
Guangdong Cable Network, with total assets of more than 15 billion yuan (HK$17.4 billion), has a core business in broadcasting television program transmission, and its users exceed 14 million.
