Nine-year-old takes Oz anthem standCentral Station | 13 Sep 2018
A nine-year-old Australian schoolgirl mimicked NFL players in America when she refused to stand for the national anthem to protest institutional racism.
Harper Nielson's action sparked intense debate after she was given detention for not joining in a rendition of Advance Australia Fair - which she says ignores the country's indigenous people. "When it was originally written, Advance Australia Fair meant advance the white people of Australia," she said.
"When it says 'we are young,' it completely disregards the Indigenous Australians who were here before us."
Harper said she made the decision to protest herself, but had discussed the issue with her parents.
