China's crackdown on online rumor-mongers and fraud has snared a 17-year-old who pretended to be a billionaire and posted Photoshopped pictures of himself with world leaders like US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Shandong police are investigating the suspect, identified only as Shi.

Shi claimed he was a Chinese New Zealander from Hong Kong, and gave himself fake titles, including being a board member of the Japanese Red Cross Society and director at a fictional Shandong Internet Economic Research Center.

Shi went viral on Chinese social media websites after he was exposed, but his Weibo account, which used to have more than 10,000 followers, could no longer be found as of yesterday.
