World Cup party worth the wait for FranceSports | 11 Sep 2018
France finally celebrated winning the football World Cup with home fans after Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud scored in a 2-1 win over Holland in Paris.
It was Les Bleus' first appearance on home soil since they beat Croatia 4-2 in the World Cup final in Moscow last July.
The match was supposed to be part of Uefa's new Nations League but in reality it was just a prelude to World Cup victory celebrations on the pitch in front of almost 80,000 fans. "The victory was the most important thing, so we can have a great party," coach Didier Deschamps said.
The day after beating Croatia, the players were paraded hurriedly down the Champs-Elysees Avenue en route to a reception hosted by President Emmanuel Macron. The rushed nature of those celebrations disappointed the 300,000 fans who took to the streets.
