Life in Berlin has Liu Xia smiling

Central Station | 20 Jul 2018

Liu Xia is all smiles in pictures now circulating of her starting a new life in Germany after nearly eight years of house arrest in Beijing.

Since arriving in Berlin last week, the 57-year-old artist-poet widow of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo has kept a low profile. Except for smiles at cameras during a stopover in Helsinki she has been out of sight, refusing interviews and shunning public functions.

She even missed the packed vigil held in Berlin's Gethsemane church last Friday to mark the first anniversary of her husband's death from liver cancer at 61, fearing for the safety of her brother Liu Hui who remains in China.

The latest photographs are from the Independent Chinese Pen Center. They show Liu Xia joining a gathering at the home of dissidentLiao Yiwu last Saturday. The center's president, Liao Tianqi, and poet-singer Wolf Biermann were also present.

Liu, who has been suffering from depression, went though medical checks upon arrival in Germany.
