Three McCain generations on one shipCentral Station | 13 Jul 2018
Not just one, not just two but three generations of McCains are now honored on a US Navy ship.
Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer added US senator John McCain's name yesterday to a destroyer already named for his father and grandfather, who were admirals.
The re-dedication was on the John S McCain at the US base at Yokosuka in Japan. But scaffolding covered the mast of the guided-missile destroyer, undergoing major repairs after a deadly collision with a commercial vessel last August.
The three generations of McCains share the same name, John Sidney McCain, though they went or go by Sidney, Jack and John respectively.
Sidney was a carrier task force commander in World War II, his son Jack was a submarine commander in that conflict and rose to be head of the US Pacific Command during the Vietnam War. And John was a naval aviator who was captured in Vietnam, where he was held for five years.
