US repatriates fugitive banker

China | 12 Jul 2018

A Chinese man who embezzled US$485 million (HK$3.78 billion) from his employer in the biggest bank corruption case in China's history was repatriated yesterday from the United States.

China's "Sky Net" operations to bring home overseas fugitives suspected of corruption and economic crimes are a key plank of President Xi Jinping's sweeping campaign to eradicate graft.

Xu Chaofan, former president of Bank of China's subbranch at Kaiping in Guangdong, fled to the United States in 2001, but was held in 2003 following cooperation of law enforcement officials in the two countries.
