More swimmers to tackle harbor

The annual cross-harbor race welcomes 600 more leisure swimmers this year.

To be held on October 21, the New World Harbour Race is accepting applications from today until August 1.

The one-kilometer route, from Tsim Sha Tsui public ferry pier to Golden Bauhinia Square pier in Wan Chai, is unchanged.

The competitive category again has 600 swimmers. But the number of people in the leisure-swimmer category increases by 600 to 3,000. The leisure group does not involve any rankings and is open to swimmers of 12 or above. All those taking part in the leisure event must use a numbered safety tow float.

And would-be cross-harbor swimmers face an advance test. They will need to swim 1,500 meters within 45 minutes to obtain a race accreditation. Groups will be made up according to time-trial results and in the leisure group by a ballot among eligible applicants.

Swimmers will go into seven categories.

The international category for the New World Harbour Race must be aged 14 or more.

There will also be the Invitation Cup category for swimmers who are invited by the sponsor. They will include disciplinary service personnel from supporting associations.

Applications can be had at www.hkharbourrace.com.
