Lam takes high road on son-Xiaomi link

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said she won't file a libel suit against Next Magazine that alleged that she would facilitate the local listing of Xiaomi as her son works for the mainland electronics and software giant.

"Such reports are fake and strained," Lam said when asked about the report by lawmaker Cheng Chung-tai. "I don't intend to sue it [the magazine] for libel as it's a waste of my time and energy. I believe the truth speaks for itself."

Cheng's question, which also referred to alleged bids by two senior officials to exploit the stamp-duty-exemption mechanism for home starters apparently stung Lam, prompting her to warn Cheng against making allegations against officials.

Next alleged that Lam has endorsed stock-market reforms, including provisions for weighted voting rights, to facilitate Xiaomi's listing bid since her son, Lam Jit-si, works as an operational manager there. Lam slammed misreporting in the local media.
