New man at Tianjin helm

China | 3 Jan 2018

Beijing has named an acting mayor for Tianjin after the man who occupied the post was jailed for graft.

There are also ambitions for the port city near the capital become a financial hub for northern China. It is already a municipality along with Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, giving it special status.

Former mayor of Chongqing Zhang Guoqing is now Tianjin's acting mayor and deputy mayor. That follows ex-mayor Huang Xingguo's jailing for 12 years in September for accepting bribes.

Another move sees deputy Tianjin major Yan Qingmin become vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission.
