Opinions always differ on everything, and that was exactly the case when the new hybrid taxis hit Hong Kong in all their boxy glory.
Some people were thrilled, while others were disgusted, after a sharp-eyed netizen uploaded a picture of four red, van-like vehicles onto a taxi drivers' Facebook page.
"It's ugly," one internet user complained, while others applauded its speedy delivery from Japan. Importer Crown Motors confirmed they are the new Toyota hybrid taxis, which run on liquefied petroleum gas and electricity. But they're not ready to hit the road yet, and no official launch date has been set.
Toyota earlier announced that the new four-seat taxi will come with a wheelchair-friendly electric sliding door. With a price tag of about HK$300,000 each, the new vehicles will start running in the SAR by year end at the earliest.
The hybrid will replace the old four- seat Toyota Comfort model, whose production will stop by year-end.
