The US Coast Guard rescued a Chinese man - voyaging from California to Asia in an ocean rowboat - off Hawaii.
The Coast Guard identified him as Yu Ruihn, a Chinese national who was rescued about 56 kilometers northeast of the island of Maui.
Yu, 32, left California on June 9 and was headed for China and Taiwan when his 51/2-meter vessel developed communication failures and a damaged rudder, the Coast Guard said.
Yu's friend notified the Coast Guard that the rower was in possible distress after receiving Yu's text message on a two-way satellite communication device.
A friend will send him parts for repairs.
