White Dove lost in black cloud

Overseas Education | 12 Oct 2017

Accused of racism, Dove apologizes for an ad that depicts a black woman turning white by using its body lotion.

Following the ad being dumped, Dove tweets about how it "missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully" and adds: "We deeply regret the offense it caused."

Perhaps someone complained of Dove not apologizing: it regretted landing itself in trouble but wasn't saying sorry for what it did. Anyway, Dove came back to "apologize deeply and sincerely for the offense it caused."

As for our headline, Dove's logo now is a gold bird, but the natural white of a dove endures in outlines. So we go with white as that flies with this story.

The "black cloud" also fits with disgrace, though mostly you'd simply say someone is "under a cloud." That refers to a person being under suspicion. But it can point to being in actual trouble or out of favor. It's a metaphor that's floated around for 500 years.
