Hunt for rapist who followed woman to Tuen Mun flat

Police are hunting for a rapist with partially dyed gold hair who attacked a 30-year-old woman in her Tuen Mun home.

Inspector Wong Wing-hung of the Tuen Mun District Crime Squad said the rapist had followed the woman to the door of her flat in Po Tin Estate at around 11am on Friday.

He then "pushed the woman into the flat as she opened the door. Then he used force to subdue her and sexually assaulted her."

He left the flat after raping the woman, though she only reported to police that night.

But officers were able to establish the man's appearance after questioning the woman and checking footage on the building's CCTV system. The Chinese man appears to be 28-30 years old, about 1.7 meters tall and of medium build. Besides the gold dye he wears his hair short.

He had been wearing a gray short- sleeved T-shirt, blue shorts, black shoes and carrying a shoulder bag.

District crime squad members were joined by Police Tactical Unit officers in talking to residents of the estate and the surrounding area and also handing out questionnaires. Anyone with information was being asked to call 3661-5800 or 3661-5740.

Police said security measures at the estate needed to be enhanced. They also urged residents to be on alert when they are returning home to check if there was a stranger following them. And anyone who realizes they are in danger should seek help from nearby people or report to police immediately.

Officers denied they delayed making an announcement until two days after the incident. It was pointed out the victim did not make a report until Friday evening, and then officers had to take statements and carry out an initial investigation.
