France looks set for right turn

World | Feb 10, 2017
Far-right leader Marine Le Pen will win the first round of France's presidential election survey, results out yesterday show after earlier polls indicated she would lose to centrist Emmanuel Macron.

Harris Interactive's poll for the April 23 first round indicated Le Pen, who heads the anti-immigrant, anti-EU National Front, would get 24 percent, Macron 21 percent, and Francois Fillon, a conservative hit by scandal, 19 percent. The top two go into a May 7 runoff.

The poll assumes, however, that centrist Francois Bayrou will run and take 5 percent. But he has not declared himself a candidate. If he does not run Macron or Fillon will benefit.
