Manila to play cool in hot sea

China | Jan 12, 2017
The Philippines' top diplomat says his country will not raise 2016's international arbitration victory against China's territorial claims in the South China Sea when Manila hosts regional talks in November.

Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay said pressing the ruling during an annual meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations would be "simply counter-productive for our purposes."

But Yasay said Manila will raise the ruling, which invalidated China's relatively recent claim, in bilateral talks with Beijing.

President Rodrigo Duterte has during his first six months sought to improve relations with China.
