Elements dictate harmony or chaos

One of the most influential Han Dynasty scholars and philosophers was Dong Zhongshu, who wrote Luxuriant Dew of the Spring and Autumn Annals, or Chun Qiu Fan Lu, which delves into the five elements more than 2,000 years ago.

In the creation cycle of the five elements, the energy embedded between the sky, or the cosmos, and the Earth consists of both yin and yang, with the exchanges between them resulting in the four seasons.

The creation cycle of the five elements is conducive to advantages such that anything that creates and moves in a clockwise direction results in a harmonious state, and anything that repels, or is anti-clockwise, creates chaos.

East represents wood, the base and source of agricultural products. Wood creates fire as in the cycle of five elements. Spring is the time and the virtue of benevolence is in command here.

Things should be in a clockwise position, or go with the flow in this time frame.

Should things turn otherwise, it would create havoc in the agricultural cultivation process. This is the time to cultivate the five grains, or staples. As such, things should obey the nature of the Tao.

Fire is in the south, where things are growing after being planted in early spring. The virtue of wisdom dictates this period. Many scholars are well versed in cosmology to manage unforeseen weather and catastrophes. Well before the crops start to grow, such predictions would reduce damage, if any. This is critical in chaos management.

Loyal and helpful aides to the king are needed at this critical time. A calm and peaceful country is the ultimate goal of a powerful kingdom. Fire breeds Earth.

Central represents Earth and kingdom. The virtue of honesty is in command here. Earth breeds metal. To prevent disastrous and criminal acts, do not mind a humble and run-down body. Accept both victory and failure, have a firm and convincing ideology, and conviction that leads in all areas with loyalty and filial devotion. Act according to changes when circumstances warrant and dictate.

West represents metal or gold. The virtue of justice is in command here. The filial aspect is emphasized, such as respect for the elderly and king.

Law and order should be adhered to by rulers and the ruled. Justice and incorruptible values warrant the highest regard. Any wrongdoing should be rectified and punished accordingly, without fear or favor.

Metal breeds water. North represents water, with virtue or courtesy in command here. Governments should observe proper procedures. Young and old should act in an orderly manner. Avoid receiving kickbacks to ensure a corruption-free government.

Confucius taught such values.
