China's women were downgraded from gold to silver for an illegal change in the team sprint final at the track cycling world championships a decision that so incensed their French coach Benoit Vetu that he suffered a suspected broken hand hitting a table in anger.
Gong Jinjie and Zhong Tianshi had appeared to have successfully defended their world title in London against Russia, but they paid the price for not doing the changeover on a designated part of the track.
"It is the rules but the rules are bad," said Vetu, his right hand in a cast.
"It was a millimeter too early, that is all. One millimeter."
After China's relegation, the Russian duo of Daria Shmeleva and Anastasiia Voinova were declared world champions.
Germany came from behind to beat Australia by just over one-tenth of a second for the bronze medal.
