Reborn champ seeks prayers for typhoon-hit country

Monday, November 11, 2013

Filipino boxing star Nonito Donaire, pictured, stopped Australian-based Vic Darchinyan in the ninth round of a non-title bout in Texas, and then asked for prayers for his typhoon-battered country.

Donaire, 30, was trailing when he snatched victory in a rematch of former world champions.

He felled Darchinyan with a left hook, and although the Armenian-born boxer rose and continued, he looked unsteady and the fight was stopped.

"Please pray for people in the Philippines," Donaire said.

More than 10,000 are feared dead in the country in the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
