Samson Young Kar-fai is a familiar name now after becoming the first local person to win the Bloomberg Emerging Artist title. It's no wonder many people want to work with him.

I was told he has accepted an invitation from the Student Chorus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to compose a piece of music When He Said portraying the love between young boys and girls.

The world premiere is scheduled for the end of this month. If you love music this show is one you really should not miss.

The Student Chorus is made up of Chinese University students and alumni. They stage a concert every year. The theme this year is Love Is All Around.

One of the main attractions in the upcoming concert is, of course, Young's first performance with students.

Szeto Ka-yan, one of the organizers, told me Young was enthusiastic about being on stage with the students and immediately agreed to write some music for the concert.

His piece, When He Said, complements the love theme of the show.

The work, I heard, dwells on the memories of a girl's love affair. She recalls the sweet and touching words her boyfriend frequently proclaimed before they broke up.

Szeto said almost all university students are in their early twenties and love is a common topic even for those who have not fallen in love before.

Love stirs up strong emotions, and has a stronger effect when love songs are sung, Szeto said. Young faced some limitations when composing his piece for the Student Chorus. For instance, the university does not have the luxury of hosting a big professional orchestra.

So Young's composition consists of light melodies, female vocals and piano music. Young has also included vibraphone and electronic sound effects to give his work a romantic touch.

To help chorus members immerse themselves in the spirit of the piece, Young urged them to imagine working on a plain black-and- white watercolor painting.

When there's a clash of chords, it will be like suddenly splashing red paint on the painting.

Young is a rare new generation artist, whose rise to prominence has made Hong Kong proud. I remember the contemporary music portal Sequenza 21 describing his music as "epic, dark and fun."

In addition, his achievement is not just in music but also in installation and multimedia arts. He is someone who is good in all he does.

I believe Chinese University students will gain a wealth of experience working with him.
